Piha Surfing

Shredding the Gnar Gnar

Friday, April 4th - Saturday, April 5th
As a group of surfers and want-to-be surfers, we headed out early Friday morning in a luxurious mini van. We packed the car up with snacks and water and headed out to Piha for a weekend of surfing. When we arrived at Piha Surf Shop we got settled in our accommodations which was a glamorous camper type thing. Maggie, Ryan and I stayed in the camper while Marco and Dave pitched a tent and Pat and Mickey posted up in the mini van. We then picked out our wet suits and grabbed our boards to head for the beach. The waves at Piha just kept being set after set so it was a little difficult to paddle out really far. I caught more than a handful and as the tides began to change I body-boarded a lot. I even rode on my knees for some! Because it was low tide we were able to walk out into a cove where we saw a keyhole that surfers ride through to get to where the waves break. We watched the sun go down and hung out on the beach for the remainder of the night. A black lab named Chock stayed with us for awhile and when we went back up to the surf shop we called her owners. At this beach we met so so many dogs who just roamed around while their owners surfed. On Saturday we just hung out on the beach while some people surfed and just lived the simple life. I also got to jump on this trampoline that had the best view.
