A Weekend in Coromandel
Friday, February 28th
We eagerly arrived at the car rental place ready for our first unsupervised weekend adventure. There were three cars for the 20 of us; one car, two mini vans. I opted out of the mini van because I think everyone deserves a long road trip in this glorious mode of transportation (R.I.P. Windstar Mini). Our drive to Coromandel took approximately 3 hours where we saw rolling green landscapes of sheep, cows and 1 bull. Steven drove the car which was very impressive considering I keep failing to walk on the left side of the sidewalks. Our hostel was in Whitianga (pronounced Fiteeanga) and right on the beach! The hostel let us borrow kayaks for the day and we all got to enjoy getting dragged out to sea. That night we had some nice burgers and all sat on the beach playing games and looking at the stars which we awesome. The milky way is wicked close to this part of the world and the stars glowed really bright.
We went to Hot Water Beach during low tide so we could dig holes. The sand is so close to the lava beneath the beach that when you dig holes you're creating a hot tub. The waves at this beach were ginormous and so much fun to play in. I got tossed around like a washing machine which was all fun and games until I almost got stuck in a rip tide. That night I helped make pasta and salad for 20 sun-exhausted animals.
Sunday, March 2nd
Cathedral Cove took about 45 minutes to hike down to. Once we arrived at Cathedral we got to explore around and take photos (note: the photos don't do it justice). It was so much fun spending the day at this breathtakingly beautiful beach. We swam out to the rocks/cliffs and clenched our cheeks and jumped right in. Unfortunately we had a long journey back to Auckland. I had two fresh off the boat from China roommates, Mi and Lucy waiting for me when I got back so that was a nice surprise. Mi has a rice cooker (shout out to Meg Killian) so we're going to get a long great!
Until the next adventure, cheers!
